so it was time for a new desktop background and rather than downloading an image of ‘unicorn in space’ or ‘dew-drops on grass’ (attention blogs that post galleries of desktop images: these kinds of images comprise 80% of yours and everyone else’s galleries and they really suck. A lot.) I decided to make my own.
Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be successful and put it into meaningful terms (i.e. not measured by a dollar amount). Read Wired and you’ll understand what I mean — it’s full of people with huge ideas. I’m finally starting to put my head around some of it and this idiom I came up with seemed like one tenet of what it is to be successful.
And if you think that’s just complete nonsense, there’s a four-column grid that you can use to organise the stuff you’ve got on your desktop (note: this does not give you carte blanche to leave shit all over your desktop — terrible practice). There’s also some padding on the right for your HD icon.
Anyway, it’s available below (1920×1200 — 23″ Apple Cinema Display size but should scale). Please share and enjoy!
if you’d like the .psd, email me.

I’ve only recently really learned the virtues of designing on a grid, and it makes life a lot easier. gridr buildrr is a great tool for figuring out the best way to arrange your new grid. It’s easy to use, comes wrapped in a nice interface, and even has various standard content sizes that you can drag around to check for fit. It’s even got draggy action and animated effects.

If you need to brush up on your grid knowledge, I would recommend reading this, as well as stopping by The Grid System.
However, if the design you’re making the grid for is going to end up on the web, you might want to check out Grid Designer 2. It outputs your grid in CSS, and even has an interface for creating CSS typography.
APPENDED: My old standby grid figure-outer (and the originator of the Awesome name) was created by friend and designer-extraordinaire Lee. The Original Grid Figure-Outer solves something many others don’t: if you start with fixed size constraints, it will let you fit the grid inside a given size. It’s an Open-To-the-World Google docs project, so enjoy!

smart and handy. Just type yourself a note and it’ll chill in your browser! Hate the clutter of having stickies everywhere, but having at least one at any given time is ineluctable — here’s the fix.
